Awalix specializes in providing comprehensive environmental services to protect, maintain, and restore natural resources while promoting the preservation of cultural beliefs and ecological integrity. Our goal is to contribute to the sustainability and stewardship of our environment through a range of programs and initiatives. We offer a variety of services to support environmental stewardship and promote the well-being of natural ecosystems, wildlife, and the communities that rely on them.

Here are some of the key services we provide:

  • Advocacy, Monitoring, Research & Training

We actively address the issue of marine debris through clean-up activities, waste management strategies, prevention, and public awareness campaigns. Our efforts aim to reduce pollution without burdening communities, protect marine life, and restore the beauty and health of marine ecosystems.

  • Environmental Education, Outreach & Awareness

We believe that fostering awareness and understanding is crucial for successful stewardship efforts. Our comprehensive range of services encompasses developing and implementing awareness campaigns and educational programs aimed at promoting ecosystem-based management and inspiring conservation activities within communities. We offer a diverse array of educational resources, workshops, training, and outreach programs, all designed to engage and empower individuals, organizations, and communities in environmental conservation and sustainability efforts. Our ultimate mission is to cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility and stewardship by promoting environmental literacy and equipping participants with training and methods to encourage active participation in conservation initiatives.

  • Marine Mammal Co-Management

We provide marine mammal population monitoring and research services, including biosampling, disentanglement, and habitat work. Our goal is to ensure the sustainable use of marine mammal resources while protecting their habitats and supporting the cultural and economic needs of local communities.

  • Marine Debris Prevention and Removal

We actively address the issue of marine debris through clean-up activities, waste management strategies, prevention and public awareness campaigns. Our efforts aim to reduce pollution without burdening communities, protect marine life, and restore the beauty and health of marine ecosystems.

  • Invasive Species Research and Prevention

We implement prevention programs to protect vulnerable ecosystems and native species. Through innovative techniques, such as data collection and monitoring efforts for detecting, tracking, and eradicating invasive species threats (e.g., rats), we strive to mitigate the adverse impacts of invasive populations on fragile ecosystems.

  • Reindeer Research and Management

Our reindeer management services focus on sustainable practices that support the health and vitality of our reindeer population. We work closely with Indigenous communities to develop management plans that balance cultural traditions with the conservation of reindeer habitats and ecological integrity, implement population and habitat research and enhancement projects, and provide permitting and regulation/ordinance frameworks for monitoring hunting activity.

  • Community-Driven Environmental/ Biological Monitoring

We utilize cutting-edge web-based technology, a suite of smartphone applications (apps), and an online database providing users of communities the ability to collect environmental data, local, Indigenous and traditional knowledge, and observations that are uploaded to a secure community-owned database. Of the tens of thousands of contributed data points thus far, a majority focus on environmental/ecological data (e.g., marine mammals, seabirds, fisheries observations, weather data, etc). Our monitoring tools provide a flexible framework and suite of tools to Indigenous organizations that need to implement coordinated data collection efforts across vast landscapes (i.e., Arctic, transboundary regions, etc.), as well as for specific research methods to be designed in a way that addresses Indigenous communities’ unique concerns related to food security and local resource management or climate adaptation planning needs.

  • Water Quality, including HABS (Harmful Algal Blooms)

We assist communities in implementing water quality testing including whole water sampling, plankton tows, collections and testing for chemicals, contaminants, ocean acidification, and other concerns.  Our water quality program continues to expand, consistent with advancing and emerging technologies. As harmful algal blooms have become more of an issue with climate change, our program has focused on expansion of monitoring to all parts of the food web, including real time, low cost, low tech monitoring of water samples. Our research methods are designed to address Indigenous communities’ unique concerns related to food security and climate adaptation planning needs.
